Yes, she did go back to American Idol but hmmm it felt a little strange. I am about to sound like Simon here, but you know when you go back home from college for a little visit and your Mom insists on taking you to see an Aunt you don't like? So then you go and it is all very awkward, but you've done your duty and are off the Aunt visiting hook for another year. That is sort of what it felt like to this viewer. There was a nice little montage for Carrie at the beginning, but no talking to her. Not sure whose idea that was, but I think that considering all her accomplishments and the fact that Carrie has ALWAYS been appreciative of American Idol you would think that at least Ryan would talk to her about that a little and MAYBE the judges would even chime in their congratulations. That didn't happen, even though it probably would've taken two or three minutes max.
Carrie sang "Wasted" using the American Idol band, but had Fiddler Boy along and thank God she did. Was the song sped up or something? Carrie sounded really good though, some noticed a few pitchy parts as did I, but she isn't a contestant this year, so I just enjoyed the whole thing. The Idols were singing along, which was really cute - Paula was dancing, Randy and Simon were actually paying attention, unlike what they did to poor Kellie Pickler. Some wish that Carrie would have sang "Before He Cheats" instead, but after hearing what the American Idol band did to "Wasted" I am glad they left my favorite Carrie song alone.
And then it was over and much too short! I and other fans and maybe even non-fans alike, would have wanted to see more of her.
Have to discuss the shallow, like we all love to do! Remember the teal dress she wore last year to AI, the one with the peek-a-boo cut out in the bodice? I was sort of expecting something sexy like that, but we got something different this time. As you can see in the picture above, she looked absolutely gorgeous. First the hair - it was a nice change from the big curls and country hair. I liked it and more importantly, she looked her age and maybe even younger. Now the outfit....there was a whole lot of things going on, see-through leggings and an under the girls belt among others. All of these things taken separately, I don't care for, but all together it really WORKED. She was adorable little package, along with that smile of hers and flawless makeup. I am sure that Carrie has a lot of input on her look, so congrats to the stylist and Carrie herself.
Carrie has come so far in the past couple of years and as I watched the other Idols watching her, I wondered what they were thinking. Hopefully they have been following Carrie's career and took notice. Since her win on AI4 she has worked very hard, always gave due credit to the songwriters and musicians who got her to where she is today, always acknowledged American Idol and how it helped her to achieve her dream. When the new idol is crowned later this Season, hopefully he or she will follow Carrie's example of humility and gratitude.

Thanks for the recap Spork and I do get what you mean about your Aunt analogy but I was thinking that Carrie's appearance last night reminded me more of when you make that appearance at that family function once a year out of obligation and soon wonder why you bothered. Once the parents and aunts and uncles get past patting you on the head and themselves on the back about what a great job they did raising you (telling everyone what a good girl you are and listing all of your many accomplishments), they stick you back at the kids table and no one actually talks to you.
Ok so maybe this is just me rambling about my own family issues but still I think it fits.
The real point is that Carrie has been such a success and an ideal Idol ambassador that I wanted to see a bit more ass kissing (like what Fantasia got) and a bit less indifference.
If I remember correctly, Carrie said last year that she will come back (her first time coming back as an Idol winner) and perform on the show on the condition that the judges are not allowed to talk to/about her afterwards. I don't know if that was said in jest or not, and if it was the same case this year too. I do appreciate the little montage they prepared for her - it did show her incredible journey from being an Idol, all her achievements, culminating to her biggest award yet. Quite mind-boggling, if you're one of the contestants watching that montage last night, aspiring to be the next AI.
But I also do think Carrie deserves more ass-kissing than that. I thought Simon would have taken the chance to gloat how right he was about Carrie every possible chance he gets. She's the TROPHY IDOL right now, being commercially AND critically successful at the same time, and on that same note, probably the only Idol actually HAPPY to come back and perform on the show. They should be bragging about "discovering" her. What else are they looking for?!
On the shallow parts, I think she looked gorgeous last night. I like the different look. Maybe it's the tons of award shows she's been too, that I'm getting kinda used to the glammed up Carrie, so it was nice to see down-home cute Carrie for a change, while still being subtly glammed up.
I'm happy to see Ashley there too and he and Carrie rocking out to the song, but I don't care for the arrangement, not one bit.
Thanks for the recap. Great job! Last night's whole show in general was weird for me (oh my gosh that sounds just like Randy) and I felt like Carrie got the snub. Even uber-friendly Ryan was keeping his distance.
I loved the outfit. She looked so cute and fresh. And I was digging the straight hair for a change.
Ok so maybe this is just me rambling about my own family issues
Rulz, I feel ya!
Seeing Carrie back on Idol is always a pleasure and this time was no exception, I loved it.
I'm going to start with the shallow things first;
Carrie looked positively glowing. She has admitted that she generally hasn't got great skin but COME ON, that must be some good make up because her whole face was just perfect. I want me some of that...
The outfit was very now, very hot off the catwalk and she totally pulled it off. You all know how I feel about the leggings, I hate them but carrie managed to look good in them and the whole outfit worked for me even though I hate the leggings, or whatever they are. She looked gorgeous.
The hair. LOVE the fact that it was straight. I guess curly hair is for country music occasions and straight for mainstream? Whatever, I have always loved Carrie's straight hair. I still wish that the hair extensions would take a little break. What's wrong with her own normal hair? Does it have to be long? I dunno, but I still liked the look she had.
The performance! I adore Waaaaaaasted and have always enjoyed the live version. Great to see Ashley and he was amazing as usual. Kind of a weird set up though, I think he looked kind of lonely up there without the band. The damn stage is too small, I'd have prefered her to have performed like next week or something. The arrangement was different and not the best/usual but it still worked and Carrie blew me away.
The judges: They'll give Fantasia a standing O but Carrie gets a clap? I don't undertand that but I do think that they were short of time because of the special announcement so Carrie didn't get any talk time. I doubt she was that bothered really, she doesn't need to promote anything to big herself up, the montage did that for her anyway. Nice touch Idols bosses.
All in all, great to see her and I love her dearly.
So now I hear that she is going to do a 45 minute live chat next week? I hope its a surprise one, or it will be utter madness.
Nuh uh! No surprises but there is a list of rules!! Go check'em out my friend.
No talking when Carrie enters the room..hmm yeah that's gonna work.
Seriously though, what a great thing to do, if people actually listen and stick to the rules then it will work but onthe whole, there is a huge amount of room for horror. Good luck Carrie!
(I so hope the fans in there abide by the rules and keep calm, for Carrie's sake)
Hopefully that chat will have good moderators from Spark Art. They run fan clubs for other artists so I'm sure they're experienced in Live Chats.
I thought Carrie sounded and looked absolutely wonderful and according to her latest blog she had a terrific time and was happy with how everything turned out. I was listening to her radio interview with Whitney Allen and I guess Carrie does have a rule about the judges not commenting while she is on stage so that exlains that. Poor girl is still traumatized by her Idol experience apparently. LOL (and she got off EASY).
Hey y'all, don't forget to catch Carrie on SNL on March 24!!!!
She's also going to be on the cover of the April 9 issue of Country Weekly. It will be on shelves by Mar. 26.
Lots of Carrie goodness to look forward to :-D.
I'll def be staying up for this one! Any word on what she will be singing, other than BHC - aren't there two songs on SNL?
I'm just going to go out on a limb and say 'Wasted' since that's the one on the charts and it's another song that would appeal to more than just your average country fan.
The American Idol site has a 5 minute plus interview with Carrie from when she was back on the show.

Great to see that Carrie's Idol appearance inspired even MORE people to go out and buy her album:
Carrie got a nice boost from her Idol performance last week, jumping from No. 15 to No. 12 on the chart and selling 45,000, a 33% improvement over the previous week. That was enough to push her over the 5 million mark (5.04 million, rounded)
I'm beginning to believe that this thing is never going to stop selling. It's unbelievable that 16 months after its release Some Hearts is still securely in the top 20 and selling tens of thousands of copies per week. WOW!
