I found this comment by Simon in the EW article interesting

I have to agree with him, but I wonder which Season was his favorite? AI4 was my favorite, of course, with AI3 and AI5 being my least favorite.
I remembered last season they RAVED about the overall talent but I still say season 4 was the most talented and enjoyable. I didn't watch seasons 1-3 so I can't say much about those.
I actually thought the most interesting thing in the article now is how contestants aren't really in it to win it anymore. They assume they can have a successful career as long as they make the tour. I think they should change it and say that making the top 10 doesn't guarantee you a spot on the tour. Light a fire under these kid's behinds.
