Going into this, I already feel sad for Anthony Fedorov. Spanish music is his love and this is his thing and I so wish American Idol had a Latin night a couple years ago. *wistful sigh*.
Back to the present....the judges are a vision in various shades of black and grey. Ryan is still his sparkly self and I LOVE him this Season. Then comes Jennifer Lopez. She has her detractors, but I actually like Jennifer Lopez; she is a beautiful woman, savvy businesswoman and I have enjoyed a couple of her earlier movies. She is a vocal mentor tonight and hmmmm....I need to sit with that thought for a little while.
Melinda Doolittle: Sang "Sway". Parts of it were really good and even sultry at times, but there were other times I was actually bored. Definitely not my favorite Melinda performance, but still all kinds of awesome anyway. Simon didn't like it and was way too harsh with his "cabaret" and "lounge singer" talk.
LaKisha Jones: Sang "Conga". God forgive me, but I don't care for Gloria Estefan AT ALL, though she seems like a nice person. LaKisha reminded me why I don't care for Gloria or Miami Sound Machine. The backup singers drowned her out at the beginning and this one was "cabaret" to me. Even Las Vegas hotel-ish.
Chris Richardson: Sang "Smooth". He sounded really flat at the beginning and then nasalled (sp?) his way though. With my eyes open, Chris is sexy as all hell and I was very entertained. When I closed my eyes, not so much. Randy seems to love everyone tonight and Chris got praise for being modern. Ok.
Haley Scarnato: Sang "Turn The Beat Around" and ugh....she tries so HARD, but is still so boring. "You had fun up there" is Paula's nice way of saying it sucked. Simon outright comes out and says she only has her body going for her. Ok, not constructive and a little offensive. I actually think that Haley has nice vocals and has really good recordings, she just isn't a performer.
Phil Stacy: Sang "Maria Maria" and this was his worst performance since Top 12. The scary expressions were back, he had new lurch moves I never noticed before, his voice sounded uncontrolled at times and even cracked. I'll say goodbye to Phil now, since Sanjaya isn't going anywhere.
Jordin Sparks: Sang "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and while it was good, she didn't seem to be enjoying herself as she has with other performances. Nice vocals, but the whole thing was kind of meh - not anywhere near Haley levels of meh, but still....meh.
Blake Lewis: Sang "I Need To Know" and it was very entertaining and a good song choice, but it was almost too big for his voice. I know this is very fangirly of me, but Anthony Fedorov would have sang it better. Yes, he would have and I sigh wistfully again. I still love Blake and he was the best tonight, by far.
Sanjaya Malakar: Sang "Besame Mucho". On the good side, the vocals were nice and in tune, but the Spanish words were really some kind of mumbly Spanglish. He didn't even try with an accent. Now the disturbing. I don't care how much new stubble he has grown, he is too young and too odd to be channeling Constantine and doing that eye stuff. OMG! Make it STOP! *shudders*.
So after last week's greatness from the performers, tonight was a bit of a letdown.
Top 3 (in order): Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, and ???? I can't come up with one.
Bottom 3 (no order): Haley Scarnato, Phil Stacy, Sanjaya Malakar

It was a boring night for me. Just one of those nights were it drug on and on. Too bad because Latin Night could have been a fun night.
Anthony Fedorov. Sigh, where are you when I need you?
I actually think JLO is a very good coach. She seemed more hands-on compared to the other coaches we've had so far, (even giving dance and beat lessons) and she really tried her best to give advice to show the strengths of each contestant. And constructive in her criticism too. Too bad again the night sucked. It wasn't JLO though, just the overall night of suck.
Melinda - It wasn't cabaret like Simon sounded, but it definitely wasn't her best. Props to her because she really tried to be sultry, which the song required. But I like sassy Melinda more.
Lakisha - She seemed to have fun like she said, but it just didn't grab me. I'm afraid for Lakisha. I feel her "shocking" elimination is coming up soon.
Chris - This is the first time I'm going to say it, but that was sooooo painful to listen to. I don't know what the judges were smoking. He didn't have to add so much runs to that song. I wished he just stayed on the melody. I agree with you Spork - he's nice to look at, but with each passing week that I hear him sing, I think that's not the voice that I would like to have on repeat on my CD player in the car.
Haley - she does not have good breath control. When she's all dancing and all around the stage, she's breathless until the end. The judges must totally HATE her. I mean, it's a dance song, and Paula didn't even bother to sway to the music while SITTING. I do find Simon's comments offensive though. I mean, it's not just Haley showing off her body - Lakisha's been showing her cleavage for the past few weeks and she gets a pass on it because she's not your usual "trashy" person. I feel there will be more "backlash" votes again favoring Haley because of Simon being so mean.
Phil - Definitely worst of the night. And deserved to go home after that performance.
Jordin - I think she did well vocally. I just wish she put on the fun she had on her peformance of "Hey Baby" into this performance and it would have been spectacular! She continues to be cute as a button!
Blake - Oh Blaky Blake! Sigh! Why do you reduce me in a puddle of goo?! Will you stop the dancing?! Please! I do agree with Spork that a much bigger, deeper, more "manly" voice would have suited the song, but I do agree with Simon that it was the best song choice of the night, and the best performance. He's such a great performer, that Blake! And it was so nice to hear him just sing it straight without the usual scatting or beatboxing! Woohoo!
Sanjaya - AI is now officially sucked in the Universe of Sanjaya by admitting defeat and giving him the pimp spot. Oh well, if you can't beat them...But I actually enjoyed his perfomance (There! I said it! Kill me now!) It wasn't the best, and certainly will not go down on any top lists of best performances ever, but it wasn't horrible, and after such a meh night, and coming from Sanjaya, it was a pleasant surprise. So sad to say, he is staying.
Top three in order: Blake, Jordin and Sanjaya (There! I said it!)
Bottom three in no order: Chris, Haley, Phil.
My bet to go home is Phil, as he was the worst of the night. But I won't be surprised by a Lakisha appearance in the bottom three, or even a Lakisha elimination.
Just who dresses these people ? Melinda looked like she is 40 years old and Lakisha had rolls of fat spilling out of her dress (in addition to the usual boobage). Sanjaya looked all kinds of scary and creepy, but we probably can't blame the stylist for that. Chris sounded terrible, but the judges loved him anyway. This is the second time that they've had Latin theme on AI (if you count Estefan's night on AI3) and it sucked both times. So maybe it's time to retire this particular theme. They'd do better with Polish night.
Thank you for commenting on the Constantine eye business that Sanjaya was channeling because I noticed it too and it was all kinds of creepy. He was even rocking the less than washed look of Con's hair and it just made it more creepy.
Tonight really wasn't stellar for me. I thought Blake picked the perfect song for him and he did the best performance of the night. Melinda did wonderful as usual and I love the song Sway but I thought the song went on a little too long. I can't really pick a 3rd for my top three because Jordin, Chris R and Lakisha all kind of bunched themselves in the middle without standing out.
My bottom 3 is much easier: Phil for being screechy and boring all wrapped up in one. Haley for being too Vegas nightclub for me (however I will say if you have the legs, flaunt them. Hey if I had legs like that I'd be rocking the Carrie Underwood style shorts too. ) Sanjaya gets my 3rd bottom spot because he creeped me out. Again.
Anthony Fedorov. Sigh, where are you when I need you?
At the very least he would have been able to move appropriately. Although I would want current Anthony to have been competing last night. If you remember, season 4 Anthony did sing a Mark Anthony song and that's where the whole "as much latin flair as a polar bear" comparison came out. However, current Anthony would have given last night's show the kick in the butt that it so desperately needed.

I lurve Melinda, but she always looks at least 40 to me. She will probably still look 40 when she is 60 though.
LaKisha's dress was NOT flattering at all. I don't mind the boobage because you can't hide those puppies [/joe simpson], but there have been nights where she has looked great. Last night wasn't one of them. Burn that dress!

Good point. I still really missed Anthony last night, esp after hearing Sanjaya not even try to have a Spanish accent.
esp after hearing Sanjaya not even try to have a Spanish accent
and what was with Lakisha having trouble saying the word 'Conga'. It's Conga for goodness sakes! How hard is that to say?
One thing I forgot to mention before. Anyone else a little perplexed when J-Lo compared Jordin to Michael Jackson?
Anyone else a little perplexed when J-Lo compared Jordin to Michael Jackson?
Is that supposed to be some sort of compliment?
Why was Jlo giving everyone the same dance moves...shimmy, shake, step step step. Mix it up woman!
And I'm going to agree with Rulz, if I had legs as great as Haley's I'd wear shorts as short as I could go without getting fined by the FCC. And if we must discuss wardrobe, I'm ready for Grandpa Blake to stop looking like he's ready for his 10 0'clock tee off on the golf course. Or Chris looking like JT from whichever magazine cover he's on this month.
According to dialidol, LaKisha is a goner tonight.

Too bad, it really should be Phil. Maybe the fugly dress did her in?

Well, I hope they're wrong. Like they have been almost every week this season of AI. Although if I remember correctly they got it right with Gina last week, but Phil was in their "safe" zone but he still ended up in the bottom 3.
There's a betting website (bookmaker.com) that has had the correct prediction for the bootee every week of the finals. First Brandon, then Steph, then Sligh, then Gina. The odds on fave to go always gets booted. I think there's some insider betting going on. According to them, Lakisha's going home. :(
I hope they're wrong this week. Not my fave performance of hers, but she deserves to outlast Phil, Haley, and Sanjaya.
I am so glad they were wrong this week. :)
