American Idol Top 7 - Country Night

I won't lie, Country Night is not my favorite theme. It always seems like a select few people are very good at singing Country, while others sing something that they think is country-ish, but really just sounds like a big mess with a slight twang (aka KUNTRY). We do have some talented people, so I am hoping for the best but am also hoping that Sanjaya is hilariously bad.

Ryan, on behalf of American Idol, send his thoughts and prayers to those at Virginia Tech. I do as well. Randy is looking preppy, Paula's stylist loves her as usual, Simon is wearing a different shade of grey.

Phil Stacey: Sang "Where the Blacktop Ends". His vocals were really nice and he was rather energetic for being Phil Stacey - I was a little bit bored. It seems like he could have done so much more with that song performance-wise. Do the judges think the same, since Simon was pinching Paula's nose during the performance (WTF?!) Nope, they all really liked it.

Jordin Sparks: Sang "Broken Wing" and really knocked it out! There was only one screechy note, but the rest was flawless - from interpretation, to the rest of the vocals. Simon crowned her the winner (sort of) and that would make me happy, although there are others that I favor more than Jordin at this point.

Sanjaya Malakar: As usual, I can't wait to see what happens. Will he be surprisingly decent (Tony Bennett night) or laughingly awful (Bathwater!). Well, he comes out wearing a red doo-rag, so I am giggling in anticipation for a Kuntry Bathwaterish performance of "Something to Talk About". He didn't disappoint. We are back to High School talent show levels, with off key singing, mumbling and some nasal thrown in to give it that special Kuntry Twang. Randy and Simon were brutally honest, but Ryan needs to shut up! He starting in with the whole "Simon, you have never liked pooooorrrr Sanjaya" business. Immediately I heard the Fanjayas gather their nails and prepare to climb some crosses, but not before voting about 548651875 times. Ugh.....

LaKisha Jones: Sang "Jesus Take The Wheel". She sang the first verse almost exactly like Carrie does, but fell a little short - which was disappointing. You could tell that the lyrics did mean a lot to her, so I give her credit for that but it was a pretty boring imitation actually. I agree with Randy, she should have made it her own and did sound shouty during the chorus.

Chris Richardson: Sang "Mayberry". Ohhhh, this is not good at all. His nasal was set to BLAST tonight and the charisma that he usually has was barely there. Chris seemed to think he did well because he was all smiles when finished, but the judges soon wiped that smile off his face. I totally agree with what Simon had to say, but Chris decided to be a McSmartass and mouthed off "Nasally is a form of singing, maybe you didn't know that." DUDE, that was just stupid! Then he gave his love to Virginia Tech and got misty, so I forgive him.

Melinda Doolittle: Sang "Trouble is a Woman" and the awesome Melinda that Wow'd me weeks ago was BACK! YES! The performance and vocals were flawless. The best part was that she was no longer dressed liked a 42 year old executive assistant, but like the young woman she is.

Blake Lewis: Sang "Where Do You Go" (I think - I didn't catch the title). His vocals were nice, but he seemed really nervous the entire time. Still very good, but this is probably my least favorite Blake performance so far. Simon didn't really care for it and apropos of what....he chose that moment to extend his sympathies to Virginia Tech. This was so weird and awkward, so maybe it would have been better to have kept the dismissive eyeroll you gave to Chris' VT sentiments to yourself instead? Just a thought.....

Martina McBride was a pretty good mentor, but this was my least favorite night so far.

Top 2: Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks
Bottom 2: Sanjaya Malakar and Chris Richardson
In danger: LaKisha Jones

Wow! I actually agreed with everything Simon said tonight:

Phil - for the first time I enjoyed his performance. And thought it was a solid vocal all throughout the song, and he really seemed to have fun with it. He's been hanging on the thread the last few weeks by being on the seal every week. Will tonight be enough to save him?

Jordin - I wasn't a big fan of the beginning, but Jordin just knows how to bring it HOME! It was my fave performance since British night, and tonight solidifies her as a strong contender. I also loved how she just stood there just so the audience could focus on her vocals. Lovely!

Sanjaya - Is tonight finally the night?! It was really utterly horrendous. It wasn't even karaoke. I was cringing every time he gets to the "something to talk abbboouttt...." part. UGH. so painful. If he's not going home tomorrow with that perfomance, then he's certainly going win this thing.

Lakisha - I actually dug the beginning. Like you Spork, very much like Carrie's. Then she tried to diva-ize it in the middle and she just went shouty. I know the song means a lot to her, but I think it's an unwritten rule that you just don't sing an Idol song on Idol. Lisa Tucker went home last year singing Kelly's Because of You. Should have been a red flag.

Chris - That was THE nasal at its worst. He really does look good every time he's on stage. But his nasal voice is just really painful to listen to. And I didn't know being nasal IS actually a form of singing. Whatever happened to SINGING 101 where it said you sing from your diaphragm, and NOT from your nose. No need for the smartass comment. He might probably have been affected by the VA tragedy more than anyone else since it's his hometown, and I don't doubt that, but the timing just seem scripted to me. Like saying the grandma died after he just got a beating. So I kinda get the eyeroll from Simon.

Melinda - Melinda is definitely at her best when she's SASSY! Yee-haw! Will she end up making an album full of BHC kind of songs?! I like everything about it! The vocal, the attitude, the LOOK - I thought the hair and make-up made her look totally gorgeous, and her age! Melinda's back!!! Trouble is a woman named Melinda!

Blake - He gets the pimp spot - is he worth it? He puts on a subdued Tim McGraw performance. I do like the song personally, and I'm glad he chose it. It did suit his voice and personality. I think it's a clean performance, but I do agree with Simon that it's just OK. It lacked a certain Blake factor that I have come to expect with his performances.

Top 3: Melinda/Jordin in a tie for first, and to give him his due, Phil.

Bottom 3 in order: Lakisha, Chris, Sanjaya.

Sanjaya should really go home, TOMORROW! STAT! But it's most probably gonna be between Phil and Lakisha.

Ugh... Chris, that was the worst trolling for votes display that I've ever seen on the show. No wonder Simon rolled his eyes at him. But I am glad to see that the judges are finally hearing what the rest of us are hearing. Yeah, Chris is nasal. And he's been nasal all along while you kept showering him with undeserved praise. But, wow, dude does not take criticism too well !
I really thought that he was worse than Sanjaya this week. But Lakisha will probably be the one to go home.

Maybe Sanjaya is finally going?

Oh and Spork, the song that Blake sang is When The Stars Go Blue, originally sung by Ryan Adams, and has been covered a lot of times. Go check out Bono & The Corrs' version of the song. Their version is LOVELY!!!

WTF Lakisha, you totally took a massive risk this week and I don't think it paid off...at all. I agree that an idol should never ever sing an ex-idol's song because you just know that most of their fans are gonna say the performance was shit or at least "not as good". IF you do attempt to go with death and sing an ex idol's song then you better do it good.

Lakisha shouted JTTW, she couldn't manage the long notes eg. Jesus take the wheee *has a breath* eeeel. Umm no, that's not how you do it. Dear oh dear, this could be her last week and while it would be a few weeks too early for her, I'd be like "oh okay, that's cool".

Melinda was amazing this week! She raised her game again which was needed, she looked great and was fun as always. Love her.

Jordin could win this whole thing if she picks the right songs every week. I love this song anyway and she sang it great. She's so pretty!
Oh and she didn't try to BE Country, she sang a country song but was still Jordin. That's good.

Chris didn't sing one of my favourite RF songs to be honest but I can see why he sang one of their songs, he has a high register and so does Gary LeVox but Gary knows how to control it without sounding off pitch; Chris has yet to master this. I like him a lot, he's sweet and cute but bring on the controlled singing.

Blake was pretty much the same as has always been; good. I didn't think his performance was fantastic to be honest and although he sings in his own Blake style it's become predictable.

So Phil can sing country huh? Interesting. I think he is due to exit the stage though, if not this week then next...or the one after of Lakisha leaves first. Well done Phil.

I can't even begin to explain how I feel about the pimp that is Sanjayer. He sould never sing country...ever again!! He's still here because people like him and think it's fun but when you get down to the lower numbers, the token pity vote usually gets kicked to the curb because then it's serious business (Please let this be the case here)
If I was say Lakisha or Chris and got voted off before Sanjayer I would be PISSED. But that's life huh?

Bring on Idol Give Back!!

I finally got a chance to watch the videos from this week and Melinda and Jordin were by far my favorites on the night. I love that Jordin took Martina's advice and just stoood there and let her voice sell the song. That's all she needed. Phil actually did very well this week too. Good song for him. I was hopeful for Blake because I think he COULD HAVE done well with his song but he was just off. It was like he was pushing too hard. The nasal didn't bother me so much with Chris this week as the fact that the song bored me. I just couldn't get into it. Lakisha disappointed me this week because that was just shouty. I'm not one who thinks Carrie is the only one who can do that song justice but Lakisha just didn't come close for me. Finally Sanjaya Sanjaya Sanjaya. *sigh*. You know for a second at the beginning there I thought he might pull it off and then...no...he didn't...again.
