American Idol Top 9 - Best night so far!

It's Tony Bennett night and already I have the funny/horrifying thought that Sanjaya will choose "Steppin Out" again to try and redeem himself, but disrespect Mr. Bennett instead. We will have to see if I am right.

Cameras pan to the judges - Randy was attacked by a Bedazzler apparently and Simon looks like he just rolled out of bed and showing too much chest hair. Paula looks polished as always and I am rooting for her continued lucidity week to week.

Blake Lewis: Sang "Mac The Knife" and even though he was dressed like a grandpa, I smiled through the whole performance. He is so enjoyable to watch and his voice just melts me. Ahhhhhh

Phil Stacey: Sang "Night and Day" and while it was a good vocal, it was pretty boring to me. The judges felt the same way, that the performance was lacking feeling. Phil responded that it was because he was concentrating on his wife. Dude! Actually, that was a pretty sweet thing to say and I am sure he has tons of feeeeeeelings for his wife, it just didn't come across.

Melinda Doolittle: Sang "I've Got Rhythm" which isn't one of my favorite songs, but it was a flawless performance. There is nothing else to say, but I hope people don't start taking her for granted because she is so good.

Chris Richardson: SQUEEE! Did you see that butt wiggle at the beginning?! Anyway, he sang "Mr Saturday Dance" and I loved this. His nasal setting must have been set to very low tonight because it was virtually undetectable and the vocals were really good. Agree with the judges, this was his best performance so far. I actually think his performance was better than Blake's, which is something I never thought I would say.

Jordin Sparks: Sang "On a Clear Day", a song I was unfamiliar with. I thought she was just as flawless as Melinda. I don't think people will take her for granted though, I suspect that she might win. She appeals more to the young than LaKisha and Melinda do and its the younger ones who powervote.

Gina Glocksen: Sang "Smile", which is a song I have always loved. I really like this girl and when she SINGS, its even better. She is supposed to be the rocker girl yadda yadda, but two weeks in a row of good singing will get you further than angsty screaming IMO. Simon noted that she was out sung by Melinda and Jordin which is true, but not in a jarring way - Gina holds her own.

Sanjaya Malakar: Sang "Cheek to Cheek" and it was actually decent! The vocals were nice, the hair was reasonable, he worked the crowd. Simon so wants him gone and tried to work the reverse psychology on the voting viewers, but its about a month too late for that. Sanjaya stays another week and I no longer give a damn (unless any of my Top 6 goes first, then its ON!)

Haley Scarnato: Sang "Ain't Misbehavin" which is a song that could have been sassy and fun. But no, we got another pageanted up and slightly dull version. Once again with this girl, sweet personality, nice vocals but meh - I wish she and Melinda would have switched songs.

LaKisha Jones: Sang "Stormy Weather" which was also very, very good. I can't explain why, but her performances all seems to run together for me where Melinda (her only real female competition) manages to bring something special to each performance. Although I want her to, I don't think LaKisha will make it to the Top 6.

Overall, everyone did really well. Even Sanjaya. Wow. I still have a Top and Bottom three and all are in order.

Top 3: Chris Richardson, Melinda Doolittle, Blake Lewis
Bottom 3: Sanjaya Malakar, Haley Scarnato, Phil Stacey

Blake Lewis: Uck! The grandpa pants return but I will say that the look, as a whole, was rather yummy. Blake is a performer and I spend more time watching him than listening, which this week was kind of a good thing. I didn't care for the vocals too much but he entertained me and kept me interested.

Phil Stacey: Bored me to tears. Yes he has a nice voice but...you need more than that to get much further.

Melinda Doolittle: Like Simon, it's a little frustrating to not be able to say much. She's on a different playing field. I mean she's so good it's even difficult articulating HOW good. Amazing!

Chris Richardson: I'll see that SQUEEE! and Raise you a WOO-HOO!! Oh yeah. I saw the wiggle. I voted for the wiggle. And then I voted again for the voice and one more time for the performance. Great job Chris R!!

Jordin Sparks: I was not familiar with this song either but the person I watch the show with (and is a bit of an old standard herself...and that is said with love and respect...but honesty), said it was the best she had ever heard it sung. She even asked me to vote for Jordin on her behalf and she hasn't done that since Carrie was in the competition. Usually the contestants don't get her to raise her nose out of the book she's reading so this is significant.

Gina Glocksen: I love this song! Gina sounded pretty at the beginning but got a little shouty at the end. Overall it was pretty good though.

Sanjaya Malakar: Is he still here? Well at least he remembered all the words this week.

Haley Scarnato: I love how they showed Tony basically calling her out for having no clue what the song was about and then she went on to perform it and it was clear that she STILL didn't know. She tried to recreate her 'Tell Him' performance but picked the wrong song. Not this time Haley

LaKisha Jones: Sang it beautifully but hasn't she sang this same song beautifully several times already? Kind of feels like it.

Top 3: Melinda, Chris, (tie) Blake and Jordin (for the 'old standard')

Bottom 3: Sanjaya Malakar, Haley Scarnato, Phil Stacey

It was a great night. Tony, like Gwen last week, was very upfront and didn't sugarcoat things. If we could only have coaches like that all the time.

Melinda is back!!!! After two weeks of just meh performances for me, she brings it on a week that was expected to be perfect for her. She did not disappoint.

For the first time, I did not hear the nasal tone on Chris' voice. Good for him! I do agree it was his best so far! If he could only be consistent like that. Although I didn't appreciate his obvious Timberlaking, particularly the clothes.

Phil was zzzzzzzz....and to think he's already concentrating on his wife that way?!

Haley is definitely channeling McPhee with each passing week she's surviving. I didn't think she deliberately left out the other judges in her interview with Ryan, so I thought it was incredibly rude of Randy and Paula to not comment on her performance. They're judges on a national show, at least show some semblance of fairness. And really, in all 6 seasons, did either of them ever think they're the more important judges than Simon?! Please.

"Welcome to the Universe of Sanjaya!" He took the words out of my mouth. There's really nothing that can be done. And can Simon be anymore obvious with his blatant manipulation?! If only they were constructive and fair in their judging rather than manipulating, I think Sanjaya could have been long gone.

Blake is yummy in his suit! But I think he's had better performances than last night.

I do agree with you Spork that Lakisha might be one of the bigger shockers that will happen this season in that she won't make the Top 6. Melinda is just awesome, and like you, I can't point it either, and Jordin is showing to be the most improved contestant in that she's shown the most growth and she's not afraid to challenge herself. Lakisha at most, have been just static. I won't be surprised if she hits the bottom 3 in the next few weeks.

Top 3 in order: Melinda, Chris, Jordin

Bottom 3 in order: Haley, Sanjaya, Phil

AI superstition says the 2nd spot is the death spot, so I think Phil would go home, although I wouldn't be surprised by a Blake or Jordin appearance in the bottom 3.

Blake Lewis: I think Blake had the best song this week, I adore Mack The Knife! Great performance overall. I love him.

Phil Stacey: Yeah whatever. I don't get him at all and have no idea who would buy his album. That was a totally boring performance. Didn't like it at all.

Melinda Doolittle: She's just a fantastic singer AND performer. I don't think anyone can be negative. However, I think the fact that she is so good every single week, people can just become complacent and just assume she is safe etc. I think she needs to try and find a song that she can somehow (I have NO idea how though..) raise the bar once more so that we're shocked. Think Carrie Underwood - Alone or Bo Bice - In A Dream..that kind of thing. They were both favorites from the start like Melinda but they still pulled something out of the box to make us speechless. She can do it...

Chris Richardson: Chris is so HOT. I loved his look this week, very nice! I liked his performance and his voice is different and great this week!

Jordin Sparks: Jordin hs grown on me so much, every single week I love her even more. I agree with you Spork, I think she could win this especially if she continues to get better and better and I would be happy if she did.

Gina Glocksen: So Gina can sing, she has proved this twice now. Keep it up girl, you'rea rocker chic but sing the songs and you'll be in this thing for a while longer.

Sanjaya Malakar: Ok so this is getting silly now. It was better than his past performances but he can't stay for much longer...can he??! I think what could possibly happen is that he'll last for a while yet but when we're left with the big hitters and him, he'll be saying buh bye.

Haley Scarnato: Time to leave... Haley is a beautiful girl but she has no spark. She has good legs but then what? Her vocals weren't terrible but I can so take her or leave her.

LaKisha Jones: You can't deny that she is a favourite and can siiiing but again, she needs to raise her game again just so we can see something different.

I imagine Randy and Paula did this because Haley said before she performed that the only comments that really meant anything to her came from Simon. Randy and Paula really have been giving some better constructive criticisms this year as opposed to previous seasons so I imagine that had to sting a little when she said that. But then again look at the comment Simon gave her: "Nice legs". That's useful.

Lakisha at most, have been just static. I won't be surprised if she hits the bottom 3 in the next few weeks.
You know I can see this happening too.

So is she incredibly lucky to not have the judges say a single thing about her performance other that Paula's "you did your thing"?

Chris is so HOT

I'll second that!

This is according to some guy on IDF with sources. He has been right the past couple weeks, but still....HUGE grain of salt.

1. Melinda
2. Sanjaya
3. Chris
4. Phil
5. Blake
6. Jordin
7. Haley
8. Lakisha
9. Gina

Haley and Gina, not surprising - although Phil should be there instead of Gina IMO. LaKisha? I still think she will be a surprise elimination at some point, but not tonight.

spork, I actually heard that Nigel said the boot would be the biggest shock in Idol history. To me, that can only mean Lakisha would be going home. That would make me really sad, even though I like some of the others better. Of course, it's also possible Nigel's lying through his teeth.

I love Melinda sooooooo much. I want to put her in my pocket and hug her and squeeze her and call her George. I love Tony Bennett too, but not quite as much. His coaching was excellent.

This was Chris' best performance, and the first time I thought he was really attractive. He needs to stay away from the runs like this every week. Blake was adorbs, as always. I don't want Gina to go home, she's really grown on me. Her voice is pretty. Jordin's best performance for me was still I Who Have Nothing, but she is just ridiculously cute.

Sanjaya is terrifying to me. He looks like an evil deer caught in the headlights every week. I think if he stays on the show much longer, he may go postal on the audience members.

In other AI news, did you hear that my fave Constantine was doing some AI commentary and he referred to Scott Savol as a "Fat F**k who looks like a security guard"? What is his problem? I guess he's just bitter that he's reduced to doing a guest stint on a soap playing himself. :D

Oh thank you. That made me laugh...and agree with you all at the same time.

Con...just shut it.

LOL! Miss K does have a way with words. I never thought Sanjaya was eeeeeeeevil, but when Sanjaya said something about his "universe" I did get a sense of foreboding. *shudders*

And yeah, Con needs to STFU like yesterday.

I actually heard that Nigel said the boot would be the biggest shock in Idol history.

Nigel always says that though, to create controversy, because they're losing the steam fast and they know it.

For me, it'll always be the biggest shock evah every week until Sanjaya goes home.
