The show starts and as I thought would happen, they explained the whole "Simon is a *&^%@!" controversy from last night. He explained himself and was even a little emotional towards the end, but that wasn't enough. They even had split-screen proof!
More man on the street stuff and ohhhh no love for Sanjaya this time. Is this a sign? Could be, could be....
Group sing was "I'm Alright" and it was a lot of fun. The harmonies, choreography and kitsch reminded me a bit of the Brady Bunch, but in a good way. "Gonna keep on keep on keep on dancin' all though the night....keep on keep on keep on doin' it riiiiiiiiiggghhhhtttt"
So, what are the kids listening too? Interesting, but the best part was Chris, Blake and Phil clowning on poor old Peter Noone. Show some respect! Hee!
Fergie performs and it was better than I expected. She is one of those I enjoy on the radio, but not so much on stage. Liked her tonight though.
Commercial. Some kind of spy thing to the 80's classic I Ran. This was my favorite of the commercials, but how they could refrain from giving Sanjaya the Flock of Seagulls hairdon't is beyond me.
Now Ryan splits them into two groups. Sanjaya, LaKisha (moans of dismay), and Blake?! (louder moans of dismay) are on the right; Phil, Jordin and Chris are on the left. Melinda is SAFE and refuses to choose between them, but the entire left side is SAFE along with her. Same script from AI4. Meh. Judges are surprised by Blake being up there, but Simon is full of glee. There is a reason for this.
Martina McBride sings and I can see why she is one of Carrie's heroes. Her daughter was too cute!
Back to the Bottom 3. Blake is SAFE! Sanjaya and LaKisha both look like they are about to cry while Ryan drones on before finally saying that Sanjaya is going home. The crowd cheered very enthusiastically to the news and I have mixed feelings about that if I am honest. During his montage, Sanjaya starts to cry for real and damn.....this is really sad to watch. He recovers and does his singout and gives us something to talk about "other than haiiiiirrrrr". Hee! I was almost a Fanjaya the first time he sang that, but I got over it.
Well, Sanjaya is finally gone. The hunger strike psychos can start eating again, some of the more overwrought Fanjayas can stop throwing themselves to the lions over him, and we don't have to worry about him taking out more talented contestants and making the backlash worse. Win-win for us all! Seriously though, I really wanted Sanjaya voted off since Top 24 due to his singing (and at times appallingly bad singing), but I never got a pretentious vibe, fake shtick or sense of entitlement from him that we have gotten from other contestants in past years - for that, he has my respect. He seems like a nice, genuine person - a sweet kid - and I wish him success in his life, whatever he eventually ends up doing.
Here's hoping he decides to go college instead of pursuing a singing career.

Oh thank goodness! A happy ending to an otherwise crappy day (that included a speeding ticket in Southern Illinois. I knew there was a reason I moved out of that state). Now the competition can finally begin. I say that not to be really mean to Sanjaya. Hey, when I was 17 there was no way I could have handled that kind of pressure and attention and negativity being thrown at me so I give him a lot of credit for that, HOWEVER, he sounds and performs on stage like what you expect a 17 year old high schooler to sound and perform like and that just isn't good enough. Not when you have the remaining 6 in the competition with you.
Martina sounded terrific last night and I love that song. Her daughter was adorable. Hee!
Ugh, sorry about the speeding ticket Rulz. And welcome back!
Sanjaya should never had made the Top 12 IMO, but he did and at least he handled himself well. Thinking about it the next day, the crowd cheering the way they did was really rude, mean and unnecessary. You don't do that to a kid over a TV SHOW. Geez....particularly when he has done thing to deserve that.
Same thing when he was boo'd at the Dodgers game last week.
Brightside though, he has a fanbase that he can work with and he will be making more money than he ever dreamed of on the tour. Maybe after some experience, he will be better - I wish him luck.
The whole show before the elimination was like a premonition that Sanjaya is going home. Simon is smiling the whole time, and Ryan knew it as well. That Idol Trivia question was a bit funny for me too. Remember, America? These are the talented contestants that went BEFORE Sanjaya!!! It's your fault America! We could have had Gina in there! But it was really time to go home. Next week is the huge charity thingy that Idol is doing and of course they want to be taken seriously and Sanjaya should not be there.
Props to Lakisha for the long hug. She's a mother and she must probably know what that feels like for a young kid. But even more props to Blake for wiping away Lakisha's tears. AWWWWWW!!!!
I wanted Sanjaya long gone because this is a singing competition and a lot of more talented singers deserve to be in his position. But also props to him for recognizing the show is treating him as such a joke and giving them the finger back. Maybe next time, TPTB has learned their lesson on just putting the best through the top 24 and not putting so-called cannon fodder. A lot of the so-called cannon fodder actually bit the back in the ass this season.
I agree with you Spork. I hope the kid goes back to college.
Unfortunately, I don't think he is going to college. He may not have a singing career, but I am sure he has plenty of other offers. And with his sister moving to LA and looking for a singing career, I am afraid we'll be stuck with the Malakar siblings for some time to come.

Yep, that whole thing was very, very sweet. I don't blame LaKisha for being so upset, I would be too if I had a 17 year old about to lose it hugging me like that. :(
Then again, is anyone else as surprised as I am about all the hype over this kid? I haven't seen such wailing and gnashing of teeth over a contestant being voted off since Constantine. Same with all the hate as well, but there is a HUGE difference between Sanjaya and Constantine.
I am afraid we'll be stuck with the Malakar siblings for some time to come.
Someone on TWOP jokingly said that Sanjaya and his sister could be the next Donny and Marie LOL

Aw...I loved Donny & Marie. I used to watch their variety show all the time. Sanjaya certainly has the teeth to be an Osmond.
You know I think he'd be really good on like the Disney Channel or something geared to pre-teens but if this kid gets an album deal...and one before Anthony, I will be shocked...and pissed.
I don't really remember watching Donny and Marie as a kid, but definitely heard about them. I do remember very early episodes of General Hospital more LOL.
Sanjaya would be very good on a Disney or Nickelodeon show. I guess I should brace myself for my daughter developing a crush on him. EEK!
Here's a couple post-boot interviews

So what happens to you now? Do you go back to Seattle and go to your prom?
I got my GED so I'm not going back to high school. I want to go to college. I'd love to get into Berklee School of Music. That would be my dream. I want to continue my education and my career. I'd love to focus on music and maybe go into acting and modeling. I just want to experience everything.
So he DOES want to go to college. Good boy Sanjaya.
Oh Sanjayer; bless your sweet little tears. I think he knew that any week h got through was a blessing because it must have been obvious that his singing abilities were not exactly on the same level as the other idols left in the competition.
I never wished any harm on Sanjayer at all and still had n mind that he is still just a kid but as I have said before, it's important for the last few idols in the competition to be at least GOOD because it just ruins the whole show for me. Yes, we like to root for the underdog and all that but not when some of your favourite idols are at risk of leaving.
So he's gone but I doubt very much he will be forgotten. In fact, he'll be remembered more than most of the other idols from his season as tme goes by!
Good luck pretty Sanjayer, just don't be singing too much in whatever you end up doing!
Oh my...maybe they ARE planning on being the next Donny & Marie
After that: college, with the Berklee College of Music in Boston his goal, and a wide-ranging career that will probably include performances with his sister, Shyamali, 19, who unsuccessfully auditioned for "Idol."

I knew that no good could come from Sanjaya talking to Donny Osmond on Jay Leno.....
